How Long Do Eyelash Extensions Last? Aftercare Tips to Make Them Last Longer

The short answer: 3–4 weeks. The real answer: it depends almost entirely on what you do in the first 48 hours — and after.

Full eyelash extensions with a clean lash brush alongside

One of the most common questions before a lash extension appointment is how long the results will last. The honest answer: a well-applied full set will look full and beautiful for about 3–4 weeks. After that, natural lash shedding leaves visible gaps. But the difference between extensions that look great at week 3 and ones that look patchy by week 2 is almost always aftercare.

Why Lash Extensions Fall Out

Your natural lashes follow a growth cycle — each lash grows, rests, and eventually sheds on its own timetable, typically every 60–90 days. When a lash sheds, the extension attached to it goes with it. This is completely normal. The extensions themselves don't fall off — your own lashes carry them out as they naturally shed.

What accelerates shedding is anything that weakens the adhesive bond between the extension and your natural lash. That's where aftercare matters.

What to Expect Week by Week

"The extensions don't fall out — your own lashes carry them away. Good aftercare just means fewer lashes shedding ahead of schedule."

The 5 Things That Shorten Extensions Fastest

  1. Steam and heat in the first 24–48 hours. The adhesive needs time to fully cure. Steam rooms, hot showers with your face in the stream, or cooking over a large flame in the first two days weakens the bond before it's set.
  2. Oil-based products near the eyes. Oil breaks down lash adhesive. This includes oil-based makeup removers, many moisturisers, and some sunscreens. Switch to oil-free versions around the eye area for as long as you have extensions.
  3. Rubbing your eyes. This is the fastest way to pull extensions off your own lashes prematurely — and it can take the natural lash with it. Dab gently if you need to touch your eyes.
  4. Mascara on the extensions. Mascara clumps the extensions together, is nearly impossible to remove without rubbing, and coats the extension with product that attracts more product. If you feel you need mascara, apply only to the tips and use an oil-free formula.
  5. Sleeping face-down. Pressing your lashes into a pillow all night damages the curl and causes lashes to cross and tangle. A silk pillowcase and side or back sleeping makes a visible difference.

A Simple Aftercare Routine

Morning: Brush your lashes gently with a clean spoolie (provided after your appointment). This takes 10 seconds and keeps them uniform all day.

When cleansing: Use a foam or gel oil-free cleanser. Work it gently around the eye area with clean fingertips — no cotton pads that can snag. Rinse thoroughly and let lashes air-dry or pat dry with a clean cloth, never rub.

Ongoing: Avoid anything oil-based within 2cm of your lash line. Check ingredient lists on eye creams and makeup removers. If a product has mineral oil, coconut oil, or any '-oil' near the top of the list, keep it away from your lashes.

Refill or Full New Set?

A refill tops up the gaps as your natural lashes shed. It's faster, more economical, and keeps the look continuous — most clients who keep extensions ongoing book a refill every 2–3 weeks before the set looks patchy.

A full new set is best when your extensions have grown out significantly (more than 50% lost), when you want to change the style or length, or if it's been more than 3–4 weeks since your last appointment.
